Lutheran High School of San Antonio's Spanish Immersion Trip to Madrid, Spain
Over Spring Break, a group of LHS students embarked on an unforgettable Spanish Immersion trip to Madrid, Spain. Guided by our dedicated Spanish teacher, the students not only improved their language skills but also experienced the rich cultural, historical, and spiritual aspects of Spain. Here are some highlights from this incredible journey!
Exploring Science and City Life
The adventure kicked off with a visit to the CosmoCaixa Science Museum, where interactive exhibits brought physics, anatomy, geology, astronomy, biology, and chemistry to life. Later that night, students took a guided night tour along the elegant Paseo de Gracia, admiring the stunning architecture and capping off the evening with a delicious meal at a gourmet burger joint.
A Blessed Sunday in Tibidabo
Sunday began with a worship service at the Mount of the Sacred Heart in Tibidabo. The students climbed to the statue of Jesus, over 500 meters above sea level, taking in breathtaking views of the city. The day concluded with a meet-and-greet tour, allowing students to immerse themselves in the local culture.
First Day of School & Olympic History
Students attended their first day of Spanish classes and embarked on a field trip to the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, home to the 1992 Summer Games. They learned about the impact of the Olympics on the city and even visited a Greek-Latin Amphitheater built in 1929 for the International Expo Fair. Some students, including Ava and Alana, put on an impromptu Spanish performance, impressing their teachers and peers. Meanwhile, others practiced soccer in a city plaza before preparing a homemade meal with Mrs. Santory.

Despite adjusting to a different lifestyle—walking 20,000 to 25,000 steps daily and grocery shopping frequently—the students embraced every challenge with grace.

Architectural Wonders: Sagrada Familia & Casa Vicens
A visit to the breathtaking Sagrada Familia introduced students to Gaudí’s incredible architectural vision, complete with symbolic facades and artistic brilliance. Another highlight was exploring Casa Vicens, Gaudí’s first house designed for a wealthy tile company owner. Students also stumbled upon a Mexican tortillería, where they cooked authentic chicken street tacos with salsa verde and fresh crema!

Legends, History, and the Best Croissants!
Exploring the Born neighborhood, students visited one of Barcelona’s oldest convents, dating back to the 6th century. They indulged in mouthwatering mascarpone-filled croissants and sampled famous cheesecake before dining at the highly recommended Italian restaurant, Luigi.

Final Spanish Class & Karaoke Night
The group’s last Spanish class wrapped up in Poblenou, a seaside neighborhood shaped by the 1992 Olympics. A visit to a historical cemetery in the rain added an unexpected cinematic feel to the day. To celebrate their accomplishments, students enjoyed ice cream and showcased their Spanish skills at a local karaoke night, singing their hearts out!

A Journey to Medieval Girona
A day trip to Girona provided a glimpse into Spain’s medieval history. Students marveled at the Gothic-style Cathedral of Girona and the Basilica of Saint Felipe, and they explored an ancient Arab bathhouse with a remarkable hot water system—no electricity required! They even walked across a bridge designed by Gustav Eiffel before indulging in some of the best ice cream ever.

A Sunday of Worship & Culture
On the final Sunday, students attended a service at the Catedral de Barcelona and visited the Basilica Santa Maria de la Mar. Built block by block by the city’s own citizens without external support, the basilica stood as a testament to perseverance and faith. Downtown Barcelona was alive with music, dancing, and delicious bakeries, ensuring a perfect end to the trip.
From the cultural insights to the spiritual reflections, this Spanish Immersion trip was truly a life-changing experience for our students. They didn’t just learn Spanish—they lived it. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, kindness, and willingness to embrace new adventures.
Until the next journey—¡Hasta luego, España! 🇪🇸
