Dear LHS
family members,
One of our most humbling and rewarding roles in Christ’s
ministry at Lutheran high is our calling to develop,
promote and raise up Christian leaders. In order to do
this we must follow the example set before us by Christ
himself. As a leader he did not “come to be served, but
to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
(Matt 20:28) So too we are called to serve in whatever
capacity God has given us. Lutheran high school has
always required students to complete service hours each
quarter every year they are a part of the Lutheran high
family. We continue to see the value and importance of
this type of service to God and His world, but would
like to let you know about some changes for the
2007-2008 school year.
These changes are designed to present a model of what
service hours should look like, encourage students to
thoughtfully consider how they will earn their service
hours, and promote servant hearts in our students as
they reach out to their churches and communities.
Below is an abbreviated listing of our expectations for
our students (Please note that ALL students will start
the year with zero hours)
-
2.5
hours need to be completed each quarter which will be
worth 10% of their religion grade (same as last year).
These hours must be performed with the given quarter.
-
Students will be directed in their religion classes on
how to create an action plan describing and detailing
how they will complete these hours. Teacher approval
will be required. Service hours will be completed during
the quarter according this action plan. Students will
NOT be able to add up or accumulate hours as only hours
completed within the quarter will be accepted for that
quarter.
-
During their religion classes students will generate a
master list of the location of service opportunities and
a brief description of the type of service needed at
that site
-
Religion teachers will be more deliberate in searching
for and mentioning service opportunities for students to
participate in.
-
Each
semester we will conduct a school wide service day at
locations TBA. The first semester school service day
will count as the student’s 2.5 hours for the 1st
quarter and serve as a model for what service hours
should look like. This will not be true of the second
semester all school service day.
-
The
all school service days will conclude with a return to
school and closing reflective time with the whole
student body. Additional time will be spent pre/ post
all school service day within their religion classes.
Again, it is our desire to improve on this invaluable
teaching opportunity. We hope and pray this experience
will be one that is rewarding for our students as well
as those we are serving. It is also our desire that
these changes will excite our students and raise them up
as Christian leaders as they lead through their servant
example. If there any questions feel free to contact
your student’s respective religion teacher and they can
offer additional information. Thank you for your
support and prayers as we make these exciting changes.
Serving Him together,
