Mustangs Sweep the Eagles

Mustangs Sweep the Eagles

Friday night was a great night to be a Mustang!  The Lutheran High School PTA hosted the 11th annual Chili Cook-Off.  Over 80 people in attendance taste tested 20 different pots of chili. At the end of the night, Steve Oliver was declared the winner, with Rachel George coming in second place and Liz Shahparast in third place. Thank you to all who donated the chili and fixings!

There were several LHS alumni in attendance as well for our Alumni Night.  Snacks were served in the hospitality room, old yearbooks were brought off the shelf to browse through, and sports banners and shirts from years past were available to take home.

During the Senior Night ceremony between the varsity games, there were 11 seniors recognized for their participation in basketball, swim, and cheer: David Wenthe, Zach Biedinger, LJ George, Trey LeFleur, Riquie Cardenas, Erin Love, Devin Treadway, Alex Easley, Lindsey Milnes, Marlena Shadle, Sophia Hotea, and Kevin Ye.

All 3 basketball teams played in district games against the Geneva Eagles.  The JV boys started off the night. The Eagles outscored the Mustangs in the first three quarters and they were down by 15 going into the fourth quarter.  Several key three-pointers and made free throws helped the Mustangs chip away at the lead, and the Mustangs ended up winning by 1!

Next was the varsity girls game.  After taking a 3-0 early lead, the Mustangs were trailing 3-12 at the end of the first quarter.  They outscored the Eagles 18-9 in the second quarter to tie it up at halftime. The Mustangs had a one point lead at the end of the third quarter.  The fourth quarter saw several lead changes. The Eagles tied the game with 25 seconds to go, then took the lead on a made free throw. With 20 seconds to go, the Mustangs were fouled on a made basket, giving them a one point lead.  The free throw was made, increasing the lead to two. Although the Eagles had several more shot opportunities, the Mustangs held on for the win! This win secured the girls a playoff spot, earning them a second place seed in TAPPS 4A District 4.

The varsity boys also needed a win in order to secure a spot in the playoffs.  The lead changed hands several times throughout the first half, and a buzzer beater three-pointer from the Eagles tied the game at halftime.  During the fourth quarter, the Mustangs secured the lead, and ended the game 6 points ahead of the Eagles. This win put the Mustangs 4-2 in district play, earning them second place in TAPPS 4A District 4 behind JPII.

Mark your calendars for next Friday, February 14th!  Both varsity teams will be hosting the first round of playoffs.  The girls will be playing Hill Country Christian School (Austin) at 6:00, and the boys will be playing Austin Veritas at 7:30.  Playoff brackets can be found on the TAPPS website at
