Mission Trip Opportunity

Thursday, June 23rd 2011
Kayla Brock, an LHS graduate who is currently a sophomore at Concordia University Texas majoring as a Director of Christian Education with the intent to go into full time missionary work, has been working to set up a trip to Joplin, MO to help with disaster relief. The trip is scheduled for July 15-18 (Friday-Monday) and will involve working to clean up debris at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Martin Luther School, and helping clean-up/repair the church members’ houses. Below is more information from Kayla:
I would love to have anyone join her on this trip. My purpose of making this trip on a weekend is to hopefully get more volunteers who normally would not be able to take a whole week off of work to help with disaster relief. I registered the trip for thirty people, but I would love to have to contact Lutheran Church Charities and tell them that our group is much, much larger.
If you feel as though you cannot help physically but feel called to help financially, that would be wonderful too! All funds donated will be used to help volunteers with the cost of the trip. Any money over the cost of the trip will be given to Lutheran Church Charities to help with Joplin disaster relief.
Last but not least, please remember us in your prayers. I ask that you pray for our safety as we travel. I also ask that you would pray for us as we witness to those in Joplin. Pray that not only our words, but our actions as well, will show those around us the awesome love of our amazing God! More importantly, I ask that you pray for those who were directly impacted by the tornado that ripped through Joplin. Pray that they find their hope in God through this difficult time and that they can not only find their hope, but can bring hope to their neighbors, friends, co-workers, and even strangers.
Here are some more details:
1. The trip is set for July 15-18.
2. We will be working to clean up debris at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Martin Luther School, and helping clean-up/repair the church members’ houses.
3. We will be staying at Faith Lutheran Church in Bentonville, AR.
4. I would love for everyone and anyone to help with these efforts. I have set this trip up through Lutheran Church Charities and it is their policy that if a volunteer is under 18 years of age, they must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or our adult/minor ratio must be 5/1. I do have permission forms for those under 18.
5. I am still checking into transportation. If you have any suggestions or contacts, please let me know.
6. The cost will be approximately $50 per person, but this could rise or fall depending on transportation. The final cost will include 3 meals per day, housing, and transportation. As we work out the details, I will contact those interested of the final cost.
7. If you would like to make a donation please make checks payable to Concordia University Texas and note in the memo for Can-Do Joplin Trip.
Mail Checks to:
Can-Do Missions
Concordia University Texas
11400 Concordia University Dr.
Austin, TX 78726
I will not be available between June 26 and July 11 because I will be on a mission trip in Hooper Bay and Chevak, Alaska. If it is at all possible to get a list of volunteers before I leave that would be great! If not, my mom will take over while I am out.
If you need more information please contact me! I would be more than happy to answer any questions. Please pass this on to those you feel would be interested – those in your congregation, students, families, anyone! If you get a list of volunteers, please email me or give them my contact information. This is a great opportunity and I ask that you consider it prayerfully.
Thank you so much and God’s Blessings,
Kayla Brock
