HOORAH!
by Dottie Avery
Matthew Olson has had a few relatives in the US military. I guess you
could say that it is in his blood. However, it
takes
more than just good genes to get into the Naval Academy.
Knowing this, Matt used all his power, both mental and physical, and
devoted all of his time to activ ities
that
would
bring him closer to the military life. This includes the JROTC program,
The Sea Cadets, of which he has been an active member
throughout his high school career. Matt also had to not
only apply for admission to the Academy, but
also receive a recommendation
letter. This wasn't just any
recommendation letter like those the seniors are currently scrambling
for; it was a recommendation
letter from a United States
Senator, approving him to be admitted to the Academy, as he shows major
potential and drive.
So when he first received a letter from the Academy saying that he would
be able to attend, Matt couldn't do his happy dance
just yet. He still had to wait anxiously for a letter from Senator John
Cornyn, approving of his admission to the Academy.
Matt Olson received a phone call from Mr. Cornyn's office recently,
bearing the great news that Matt had been recommended, and therefore,
fully admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy! It was happy dance time!
I'm sure that Matt's family, peers, teachers, and friends are all
extremely proud of him and all the hard work he has put into being
admitted to the Naval Academy. I think Matt Olson is the epitome of the
U.S. soldier. He displays love for our country, courage, faith, and
commitment. Congratulations, Matt!!
Mustangs Make their Mark on
Choir Competition!

Zach
Fraley and Landrie Morris, Lutheran High’s impressive vocalists, showed
the judges what they were made of at TAPPS Competitions and proved they
were some of the best! Landrie made it to the Pre-Area competition, and
Zach
is on his way to Area! “Now I’m more prepared to take on
the challenge next year!” said Landrie.
At Pre-Region, Landrie made 6th chair. “That
was the easy round,” she said. It was the round used for weeding out
the large number of people. Next was Regionals, where only 60 of the 100
were taken. The top 10 went on to the regional concert. There she got
10th chair! At Pre-Area she made 8th chair out of
10. She did well, but only the top 5 advanced to Area.
Zach also impressed the judges as he sang his heart out
through Region and Pre-Area, and now he’s on his way to Area! Starting
at Regionals Zach was brilliant, getting 2nd chair out of 40!
The top ten continued on to Pre-Area where the field was cut down to the
top 5. Zach received 3rd chair of the 10 and is going on to
the Area competition where he will be expected to sing his songs and
sight-read. Sound fun? Zach says the whole thing is, “Really stressful
but really beneficial, and it helps you grow in musical ability.”
Great job, Landrie on going out there and trying your
best, and good luck, Zach! |
